Santa Clara bans mass gatherings, fate of WWDC 2020 uncertain

Apple usually holds its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in early June at the San Jose Convention Center but those plans might change this year as Santa Clara County imposed a temporary prohibition of all public and private mass gatherings due to rising concerns over the coronavirus. The ban is effective from March 11 with initial plans spanning through March 31. WWDC event invites are usually sent out in early April but given the current situation, this might not be the case this year.

Apple usually introduces its latest mobile and desktop operating systems at WWDC. This year we’re expecting iOS 14 and new iPadOS, watchOS 7 as well as macOS 10.16. In addition, there are speculations that Apple is planning to bring the long-awaited successor to the iPhone SE (iPhone SE 2 / iPhone 9) as well as an update to the iPad Pro lineup. Other potential new hardware includes a rumored 14-inch MacBook Pro, HomePod 2 and a revised Apple TV streaming box.

Recently, Google backed out of its own developer conference – Google I/O due to rising health concerns over the coronavirus so it wouldn’t be a surprise if Apple takes similar precautionary measures.
