Key Ingredient’s massive recipe database lets you search for and share your favorite culinary concoctions with other cooking enthusiasts. Beyond enlisting your existing laptop or Android or iOS device for help, though, Key Ingredient actually makes a dedicated Recipe Tablet.
This $150 device is designed to withstand high heat and other kitchen calamities that can befall an unsuspecting gadget. It operates on an Android platform and offers all the same Web-browsing, music-playing and other features you’d expect from a tablet. But this one is also “kitted out” with a kitchen timer and is ready to tackle grease-covered fingers, close proximity to heat and more.
In addition to being more mess-resistant than your typical device, the Recipe Tablet also has text-to-speech technology. That means that you can skip scrolling with raw-chicken-fingers and let it read the cooking instructions to you. The Recipe Tablet also has a built-in stand for easy viewing and relies on a digital highlighter so you are less likely to lose your place.
Key Ingredient claims to have “the largest user-generated source of online recipes in North America,” with over two million at your disposal whenever you’re connected to Wi-Fi. And if you don’t find what you’re looking for, you can add your own recipes, too.
I’m not sure I’m totally sold on this idea. $150 isn’t over-the-top expensive, but you could just buy a heavy-duty protective case for your existing phone or tablet and use the same Key Ingredient database. Still, it might be nice to have a separate device that stays in the kitchen and is already set up to handle whatever comes its way (a 90-day warranty is included).
The Key Ingredient Recipe Tablet is available for purchase on KeyIngredient.com, and its temporary holiday promo code, TECH50, will let you snag one for just $100.
